Inauguration of the first British Petroleum gas station in Mexico

March 20th, 2017

British Petroleum (BP) officially opened its first gas station in Mexico as part of its plan to invest in the growing national fuel and convenience market over the next five years.

This supply center is located in Ciudad Satélite, in Naucalpan, State of Mexico, and is the first global site of the oil brand operating in Mexico, since the country approved the deregulation of the retail fuel market in 2013. BP has plans to open about 1,500 gas stations in the next five years.

Tufan Erginbilgic, CEO of BP Downstream, said BP's retail strategy is focused on a strong and differentiated offering based on premium fuels, lubricants and convenience for consumers in growth markets around the world.

“We are delighted to be the first international oil company to serve Mexican consumers in what is the sixth-largest consumer gasoline and diesel market in the world,” he said.

The new BP sites in Mexico will feature the participation of retail stores and full-service refueling islands offering BP fuels with ACTIVE technology, which help protect consumers' engines.

“BP's retail offer is already well known in the United States and Europe for its high-quality fuels, Castrol lubricants and a great convenience offer,” said Álvaro Granada, general manager of BP in Mexico.

BP plans to open around 200 BP-branded outlets in Mexico this year, including both dealership and company-owned and operated sites.

Meanwhile, Joaquín Coldwell, Secretary of Energy, pointed out that this inauguration will contribute to the opening of the fuel market with a greater variety of brands and competition.

“As we all know, in our country, for almost 80 years, development for the storage, transportation and marketing of petroleum products was closed to private investment and, given the increase in consumption, the system became insufficient to meet current needs. and estimates of the future”, he said.

In the last 13 years, Mexico has rapidly increased its fuel consumption and went from being the 8th to the 4th place as a global consumer of gasoline.
