The exports of the maquiladora and manufacturing industry in Mexico registered positive numbers in the first quarter of the year, despite situations such as the trade war between the United States and China.

From January to March, exports increased 10.5% compared to the same period a year earlier, to reach 255.616 million dollars (mdd), according to data from the National Council of the Maquiladora and Export Manufacturing Industry (Index ).

The sector represents 56.5% of Mexico's total foreign sales.

On the other hand, exports from companies in the Manufacturing, Maquiladora and Export Services Industry (Immex) increased by 11.7% in the first quarter of 2019, a higher rate than the 4.31% for the same period a year earlier.

“In addition, the sector represents 61% of direct foreign investment that has arrived in Mexico, which means that there is confidence in the country. The growth it had in the first quarter of 2019 in relation to the same period last year is 6.9%”, indicate data from the Index.

Mexico is the 9th largest export economy in the world and the 21st most complex economy according to the Economic Complexity Index (ECI). In 2017, Mexico exported 1Q2 418 milliards and imported 1Q2 356 milliards, resulting in a positive trade balance of 1Q2 62.6 milliards. In 2017 the GDP of Mexico was $ 1.15 Billions and its GDP per capita was $ 18.3 Thousands.

Last March, Mexico surpassed China in product exports to the United States, a fact that had not occurred since July 2003.

Mexico registered the highest rate of growth in exports to the United States in April, also considering China and Canada, who are the three main suppliers to that market.

The main destinations of Mexico's exports are the United States (1TP2Q307 Billions), Canada (1TP2Q22 Billions), China(1TP2Q8.98 Billions), Germany (1TP2Q8.83 Billions) and Japan (1TP2Q5 .57 billion). The main origins of its imports are the United States (1TP2Q181 Billions), China (1TP2Q52.1 Billions), Germany (1TP2Q14.9 Billions), Japan (1TP2Q14.8 Billions) and South Korea (1TP2Q10.9 Billions).

Mexico borders Belize, Guatemala, and the United States by land and Cuba and Honduras by sea.

 

Balance of trade

As of 2017 Mexico had a positive trade balance of $ 62.6 Billions in net exports. Compared to their trade balance in 1995, when they still had a positive trade balance of 1TP2Q 15 Billions of net exports.
