ROAD TRANSPORT AND INFRASTRUCTURE IN MEXICO AND LATIN AMERICA

September 2nd, 2019

For entrepreneurs, the lack of infrastructure is one of the most problematic factors for doing business in the country, directly affecting their operating costs.

Transport infrastructure is crucial to improve accessibility, reduce congestion and increase the productivity of commerce.

According to the competitiveness ranking of the World Economic Forum 2018, Mexico is in position 49 in terms of infrastructure among 140 countries evaluated. Within this category, the country ranks 7th in road connectivity and 47th in road quality.

Directly impacting companies that must allocate around 12.7% of their sales to solve logistics issues, while in countries like the United Kingdom that proportion drops to 7.3% and in Germany it is 8.5%.

Regarding the cost of products, the average price of transport logistics translates into 30% of its value of goods worldwide, but in Mexico it can be up to 50%; when that cost could drop between 25% and 35% with adequate road infrastructure.

Latin America is one of the regions with the highest urbanization rates in the world (around 80%), it is essential to identify which strategies are effective in reducing congestion costs and improving accessibility, and how this can substantially improve the quality of life and productivity of the population.

Regarding infrastructure, history has shown that the improvement or expansion of the transport network has had as its main consequence the reduction of costs in the transport of goods, since it increases productivity, encourages trade, the creation of companies and economic diversification, facilitating regional and interregional exchange; and increasing the value of the localities due to its growth.

The head of Communications and Transportation announced a large highway investment with the purpose of detonating infrastructure and boosting the national economy, with more than 20 thousand million pesos of private resources through the splitting of concessions, which consists of associating new projects with existing concessions.

Excellent description of the road infrastructure needs in the country, and how it affects companies in this area, unfortunately there is a lack of government support for this and for everything……
